Something larger than myself: Spiritual self-care

We are living in a time where we are focused on the now, the day to day. There are appointments to go to, school projects to help complete, reports to finish for work. So far in this self-care series we have covered many aspects of our daily life, the physical, emotional, relational, psychological and practical. It’s easy to get caught in our lives, lost in the minutia. As busy human beings we tend to put blinders on, blocking out other things so we can focus on what is directly in front of us. There is another element of self-care that deserves your attention as well, and it will require you to take off those blinders for just a moment.

Spiritual self-care are activities that allow you to think larger than yourself and/or tap into your soul. This involves having a sense of perspective beyond the day-to-day of life. Spiritual self-care allows you to take in the big picture of life. At this point you may be rolling your eyes, worried or dreading if this is where I go on a rant about various religions or spirituality. You’re partially right. When you read my first article on self-care: the over view (Put on your oxygen mask first) I asked you to take a minute to think about which area of self-care was calling to you. Now if this category of self-care is something you are feeling the need to explore perhaps it won’t hurt to just take a look at the list. I’m not trying to push a certain religion or practice on you. I want YOU to find whatever is going to help contribute balance and positivity to your daily life. And in order for us to have those things, sometimes we have to take a moment and think about something larger than ourselves.

Below is a list of activities that you can choose from that help you practice spiritual self-care:

When choosing a self-care activity to incorporate into daily life, its best to start small. Choose one thing on this list and start off by doing it once a week. If that is enough for you great, keep it there. If you find you may need more perhaps your spiritual self-care activity needs to happen each day or once a week. Whatever you choose and whenever you choose to do it, your self-care activity should be something that replenishes you, so you are able to get back to your daily functioning and responsibilities.

I know you just read through this whole article. Your brain may be throbbing right now. So here are the main take aways:

  • Spiritual self-care are activities that allow you to think larger than yourself and/or tap into your soul.
  • Spiritual self-care allows your to take in the big picture of life.
  • When choosing a self-care activity to incorporate into daily life, its best to start small.
  • Whatever you choose and whenever you choose to do it, your self-care activity should be something that replenishes you, so you are able to get back to your daily functioning and responsibilities.
