5 Scripts for Protecting Your Peace During the Holidays

Sometimes the hardest part of boundary-setting is finding the words. Here are five ready-to-use scripts you can keep in your back pocket this season:

1. “I appreciate the invitation, but I won’t be attending this year.” For when you have reached your limit of attending holiday social events.
2. “That’s not a topic I’m comfortable discussing—let’s move on.” For that one relative who wants to discuss politics or asks personal boundary crossing questions.
3. “I need to step away for a bit to take care of myself.” For when you are feeling overwhelmed or stressed.
4. “I know this matters to you, but I need to make a different choice for myself right now.” For when you set a boundary and others are having a hard time respecting it.
5. “I’m focusing on rest this season, so I’m keeping things low-key.” For those times when others asks “why aren’t you coming.”

Scripts help you express boundaries clearly and calmly. Practice them aloud so they feel more natural in the moment.

Remember, it’s not your job to make everyone comfortable—it’s your job to honor your own needs. Words are powerful—use them with care and courage.
